REHEARSAL NOTES -

Rachmaninof

Firstly, I know that everyone will have their favourite recording by now but for me, the master still has it. Rachmaninof’s 1939 version is the closest to the score that anyone gets – funny that. There are a lot of recordings that just go over the top in terms of ritenuto and tempos are rather too slow or too fast. They become vehicles for ‘great’ conductors and I think often lack musical strength. Of course there are great performances amongst these but for our purposes, I like to firstly go to the composer’s recordings. I do the same with Beethoven. I am not going to interpret the work as a carbon copy of the composer, but certainly see his markings as a good template and a starting point. The below tempos aren’t set in stone but will give you an idea of where I’m at.

Allegro moderato. MM crotchet = 116

Fig. 1 MM= 96

Poco piu mosso after figure 3 MM = 100

Fig 5  MM = 88 with great flexibility in the rubato bar. This rubatop is more in the early iterations of the second theme than later on but hopefully I’ll be clear.

Violin entry of theme again rubato but moves faster after the entry to get back to MM=88 at figure 7.

Fig 8 MM = 120

We’ll skip the first time bar going straight to violas  at the bridge into the development.

This at  MM = 116

Allegro molto 4 before fig 14 we’ll start at 144 and as we progress may get to his MM = 152

But clarity is a priority here over speed. There are lots of rubato sections through the development but that will be clear from my baton.

3rd bar of Fig 19 MM = 138

Fig 22 MM = 120 starting a little easier than that but generally circa that number.

Fig 23 MM = 112

Fig 24 MM = 104 returning to recapitulation at MM 96 – 100

Fig 26 2nd and 3rd bar optional cut (half bars actually)by Rachmaninof I really like as it truncates this melody and adds tension to the moment. Interestingly, Eugene Ormandy’s recording keeps these bars in with Rachmaninof’s imprimatur.

Figure 32 This now faster (than the first time) at MM 132

F

Fig 33 MM = 88

Fig 34. Slightly moves forward

Adagio ma non troppo

MM = 50

Fi 44 MM = 60

Fig 47 MM = 152

Fig 62. I beat in 2 back to 4 at 63

Fig 66 again in 2

5th and 6th bars of Fig 68 I beat in 6 with much rubato

Allegro

MM = 132

Meno mosso after Fig 78 MM = 60

Allegro vivace (fugue) MM = 138

Moderato before Fig 95  MM = 60

Allegro vivace MM = 138

Fig. 99 MM = 100 (subito)

Fig 103. MM = 76

Fig 105 tempo moves on

Fig 107 MM = 66

Two before 108 moves on again circa MM = 80

Allegretto (coda) MM = 92

Allegro vivace MM = 152
